What do I get?
The Machine compilation consists of a .zip file (115 Mb download) containing over 70 minutes of professionally mastered contemporary electronic music, in the form of high-quality DRM-free MP3s. With each download there is also a special 19-page booklet containing visual art and further discussion of the machine-concept in electronic music and culture in general.
Here you can explore some of the varied and vivid interpretations of the machine concept. Some artists link the concept to technological advance, or seek to find a fine balance between technology and nature. Others explore it by projecting machine-like qualities onto musical structures, by altering the time scales of the composition. Hopefully, merging the various angles into one compilation produces a rich album, opening up new ways to regard machines around us.
We give this all to you for $5.00. All proceeds will be donated to the World Wildlife Fund.

Syl Kougaï - Atol mechanique Swing
My name is Syl Kougaï. I live in Neo Paris, the megalopolis of the South of France. I was born on this giant atoll of the Mediterranean basin. Here, automation is extremely developed, in every aspect of life. As time has passed, this has resulted in the unemployment of nearly all of the human population. There's no point in looking for work, there is none. I don't know how the others deal with it, but personally I can't imagine my life without working. So I've decided to become a music composer. This music that I have loved always and so much. My life immediately made sense, the day I started my first creations. Since then, I have been devoting all my time to this, day and night, heart and soul. For the souls that my waves meet. Often, in the evening when I work in my studio, I can hear the hydras groaning. These are the mechanisms that articulate the atoll and make it flexible. The artificial island stretches, contorts itself to fit the sea. I stop for some minutes to look outside at the city through my window, I cannot see a movement. But, if I concentrate well, I can feel under my feet that there is some movement, that the world is moving. And in rhythm. This "machine" of a city jives at the pace of tides, tempests, and equinoxes.
rRine - Carpon leak
If I could visually this track, I'd see a canvas with thousands of little pieces thrown about wrapped in a warm blanket. Carpon Leak started off as being very sparse, and was intended to be an 'in-between track' with layers of ambient pads, noises and a simple bass line. I started experimenting and layering different melodies together and found more substance than just a transitional track. The Machinedrum really drove the pads and ambient layers to a completely different place. I am quite fascinated with the ending of tracks, especially ones that have a bittersweet place to end up at, this track really signifies that atheistic for me.
tIB - Mitosis
Cell division and reproduction, in which a cell gives rise to two genetically identical daughter cells. For this track I wanted to create something affecting to contrast the biological machine: Electronic emotion contradicting organic mechanism.
